Observation and Analysis on the Common Reading in American Universities

Abstract:

Common reading is a type of reading activities in American universities. The article analyses the implementation, participants, objectives, reading list selection, access models of reading materials of the common reading activities. The common reading activities in American universities have the following characteristics: great attention paid by universities with enforced standard procedures; combination of reading with curriculum; established promotion mechanism; and active role played by the university libraries. Some inspirations for Chinese university are also brought out such as: carry out reading promotion activities jointly by various departments of the university, pay more attention on the long-term reading promotion, encourage students to participate in reading promotion implementation work, and strive to carry out the freshman reading promotion activities.
